Admitted Students Day

So as you may know, I am a student at Old Dominion University and President of VegODU. on Saturday ( March 24, 2018), the club was able to be present at Admitted Students Day for the class of 2022. we had a blast talking to the upcoming freshmen and their parents about our club, what it is like to be vegan on campus and what veganism means to us individually. To the left, our Vice President was the one who signed us up for this lovely event and I must say it was a hoot! Julia, to the right, has been someone I've known since high school and she has always been a joy to hang around. she is always energetic and fun and she carries that around with her everywhere! I remember in one of our math classes she would always be in trouble for talking and the teacher moved her seat like 4 times throughout the year but somehow every day we'll end up back at our table and the teacher would tell her to go back to her seat finally she stopped fighting it and just let us all be together. lol. Julia was the light of that entire class and she hasn't changed at all. Julia talked a couple people into wearing vegan stickers during the event and while they wear at their club table, people would ask about the stickers and of course they'll say that they got the stickers from us. Boom! let's spark a conversation about our club and veganism!
One of the first people that came to the table said "I love meat too much for that" and I explained to him that VegODU is an educational based club so you don't have to be vegan to be involved. During club meeting the discuss anything from companion animals to wildlife to environmental issues and each event carries a wide range of topics as well. By the end of our conversation, he signed up! We also mingled with the Model United Nation's Society that was also at the event and begun discussing a potential collaboration on earth day. Our next event is a collaboration with Anonymous for the Voiceless to host a Cube on campus. Personally, I love collaborations because they get our name out and allow for us to spread the message to a wider audience. All-in-all we had a blast getting our name out to the upcoming freshmen, talking to other organizations and hanging out with each other.

What Being a Black, Vegan, American Means To Me

I am a year old 18 born and raised African American. I am a sophomore at a university in Virginia and I am most definitely vegan. America is the land of the free and home of the home... at least that is what we are told. I see many brave men and women within America fighting for many different causes and in many different ways theoretically, they are "free" to do that. But what happens when people no longer feel free, what happens when people are scared of the very organizations that are supposed to protect us, what happens when people no longer just consider themselves as deserving of freedom?    Being black in America means being scared. It means never being free. Racism in America is something white people like to pretend does not exist unless it benefits them politically and many are racist and do not even know they are racist. If you are trying to figure out if you are racist, I am going to help you out. If you find yourself saying, thinking or doing any...
